The Holidays Are Nearly Upon Us

Just a friendly reminder … we’re creeping up on Breakup Season (December 5 – February 15!) Keep in mind that it’s not a real breakup if you’ve only been seeing each other a week or two, and I know a lot of us have been caught in the past putting off finding a significant other until it’s too late. So get on it, people! Find that sweetie now and get a few months of togetherness in so that you’ve got something of substance to talk about on that first Friday in December. Leave the last-minute shopping for Christmas/Channukah/Kwanzaa/Solstice presents for your family. To paraphrase Bob Dylan, when you got nobody, you got nobody to lose.

Also, Drinking Season, as we all know, runs from Thanksgiving Eve through January 2nd, so you should be well into your pre-season training.

Oh...little Dead Acorn. We've already discussed this. Do you not remember the extensive research done by the University of Minnesota (the real UofM) in which below freezing temperatures were correlated to an increase in overall couplehood? It's in ALL the literature.

I think you need to double-check your sources.

I don't think the two ideas are incompatible. The U of M studies really address the phenomenon of finding someone to winter with, which usually occurs later, as the really harsh cold descends. Breakup Season is an avenue for those who are already committed to each other to avoid the heavy cost of Christmas, New Year's Eve, and Valentine's Day. Ideally, one would find someone after Christmas to flesh up with until the freeze finally snaps, during which an expensive gift would be awkward anyway.

I would not suggest breaking up with a long-term S.O. for Breakup Season AND finding someone else keep warm with during the really cold months. It can make things a little uncomfortable come Makeup Day (Feb. 15th.)
